Seven Mile Cafe: The Modern Farmhouse Serving up Classics and Brunch

Whether your family is in town and you don't feel like cooking breakfast or you want a chill place to grab brunch with friends, Seven Mile Cafe should definitely be on your list if you're in Denton, Texas. Although there is room for improvement, overall the place serves its purpose very well for what it is: Fresh breakfast on the fly with a Southern home cooking flair. Without further ado, let's dive into my recent experience from the last time I went.

It was a month before school started when my parents decided to check up on the storage unit housing my army of stuffed animals, boxes of books I'll never read, and a 3D-globe puzzle that's on the verge of collapsing. Before we left, my mom had her heart set on one thing, fresh coffee and pancakes. I on the other hand, was craving a fresh scramble with some hash browns. We had searched for new places to try, but between shrinkflation and how far we were from home, old faithful Seven Mile Cafe was the right choice. Over the course of a year it had became our go-to breakfast spot on the weekends whenever they came to visit me.

Normally I would get the Amigas, but this time I decided to build my own scramble and ordered a cinnamon roll for the pastry. I got it first before the scramble. Overall it was delicious but there was one thing I didn't like, the texture. The top of the cinnamon roll was tough, instead of soft and gooey like the center. I just wished that the whole roll had the same texture as the inside. As far as the flavor, savory! It was sweet but not artificial sugar bomb sweet. It tasted like they used real cane sugar and made the glaze from scratch as opposed to getting it from a manufacturer. It was an authentic sweetness that satisfied you and kept your fork attached to it like a magnet no matter how hard you tried to pull away.

After I ate my cinnamon roll, then came my scramble. I was in the mood for something classic with a dash of Tex-Mex. It was three eggs with bell peppers, chorizo and onions scrambled together with a side of hash browns. The scramble was good, but it wasn't off the chain like the Amigas. I felt like they could've used a little more seasoning to bring out the flavors of the ingredients more and scrambled it softly. The last one is up to personal preference though and I recommend specifying that if you're really particular about it. Despite being scrambled hard, I still liked what I got. But was it enough for me to order again? I think I would give it another try scrambled softly. It was good but not, "I get this religiously every time I go here" good.

In case you were wondering, the Amigas is absolutely delicious! It's a scramble that has mild spicy chorizo sausage, tomatoes, tortilla strips, onions, bell peppers, shredded cheese, pieces of avocado, and last but not least, the best green verde salsa I've ever had. It's a perfect mixture of seasoning, heat, and tanginess with a hint of smoky flavor to round everything out. Put it all together and it's a melody of flavors and textures that make sense despite the seemingly conflicting ingredients on paper. Spicy and tangy with a pop of fresh avocado to cut through the heat and add some creaminess to the dish.

Out of the two, I would reconmend the Amigas. But it depends on what you want! And that's what I love about Seven Mile Cafe! If you want something simple you can build your own scramble but if you feel like expanding your palate or being adventurous, you can get the Amigas. The menu has a wide variety of items to choose from with a big a la carte section. There's something for everybody! No matter if you're feeling bold or trying to subdue your aching sweet tooth.
